Three times in 2 Thessalonians 3 Paul COMMANDS obedience to the work and will of God.
Firstly stating his confidence that that they “both do and will do the things which we COMMAND.”(vs4) We don’t think much of commands these days. Our modern sensibilities have evolved. We only respond to polite petitions and pleasant inquiry. This is how our proper society works. Yet Paul by way of the Holy Spirit of God COMMANDS US.
Verses 3:5-15 has Paul writing the most POLITICALLY INCORRECT, SOCIALLY ABHORRENT COMMANDS in the New Testament. In vs 6 It is COMMANDED that we withdraw from those in our company who “WALKETH DISORDERLY”. Having not followed in the example of the apostle and his companions. In context, there were men at the Church in Thessalonica who were disruptive and not working. This was not to be tolerated. Rather they are to follow the example and COMMANDS that were given them by the apostle. Having no OVERT sin, being above reproach, eating the bread of their own labor. And not being a burden, but a blessing to all those in their company. Working hard night and day. What does that mean?
