Love God, Love One Another
Prayer of Saint Aidan of Lindisfrane
Leave me alone with God as much as may be.
As the tide draws the waters close in upon the shore,
Make me an island, set apart,
alone with you, God, holy to you.
Then with the turning of the tide
prepare me to carry your presence to the busy world beyond,
the world that rushes in on me
till the waters come again and fold me back to you
Who was Aidan of Lindisfrane, Irish, Celtic Monk (died 31 August 651) was credited with converting the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity in Northumbria. St. Aidan\u2019s fame spread far and wide due to his humility, kindness, and the great number of miracles that he brought about.
He founded a ministry cathedral on the island of Lindisfarne, known as Lindisfarne Priory, served as its first bishop, and traveled ceaselessly throughout the countryside, spreading the gospel to both the Anglo-Saxon nobility and the socially disenfranchised (including children and slaves).
In his years of evangelism, Aidan was responsible for the construction of churches, monasteries, and schools throughout Northumbria. At the same time, he earned a tremendous reputation for his pious charity and dedication to the less fortunate\u2014such as his tendency to provide room, board, and education to orphans, and his use of contributions to pay for the freedom of slaves.
