A 9-volt is recommended because of both powered ends on the same side. You can put your own battery system in (probably with a switch as well) more voltage means more sparks but also more wear on the steel wool. Edit 2: watch out for the newer cans of axe body spray. They seem to have lids with material that is less dense, which probably means that it's easier to melt the lid. Edit 3: for those of you who are wondering where to find steel wool, there are steel wool brushes available, which i recommend because the handle creates a mounting point.
