One of the best things about sitting along the first or third baseline is catching and dodging foul balls. Who doesn’t want to snag a free souvenir from your favorite team? Well, one White Sox fan thought that he hit the jackpot during the White Sox game against the Twins when a foul ball came straight for his section.
It was the White Sox versus the Twins. Minnesota catcher Jason Castro hit a ball that went along the third baseline in the top of the second inning. The ball would end up going into an open row of seats in the stands. People went flying to get the ball.
A fan named Ryan Baker ran over to the ball from one section over and darted towards the empty row. A few other people ran after the ball as well, but Ryan scooped it up and held the ball in the air. Then, the craziest thing happened.
When Baker, a 15-year-old Chicago White Sox fan received the ball, a woman reached over the seats and took the ball right out of his hands. Yup, she just took it. The entire exchange was caught on camera.
After watching the incident unfold, The Sox invited 15-year-old Ryan Baker to their next game as their special guest. This was their way of rewarding him for keeping his cool during the incident. That woman is lucky that he acted like a gentleman.
Baker then got to meet all the Sox players on the field and they let him spend time in the broadcast booth. They got the whole experience on camera, and Sox announcers Jason Benetti and Steve Stone even spoke about the incident in front of the crowd. Baker was also acknowledged by Brooks Boyer, the team's Executive Vice President for Sales and Marketing.
Boyer gave Baker another ball that he had signed by Benetti and Stone, and they even went down into the crowd to give it to Baker. It looks like Baker won in the end. Well, what about the adult fan that so rudely stole the ball from Baker?
"To take a foul ball from a kid is probably not the greatest thing to do," Benetti said in an interview with WGN-TV. "But she's a fan, too, and it just shows you how much everybody wants to have a foul ball."
